BUY, CONSIDER or AVOID? Powerblocks - Home Gym & Garage Gym Reviews | Personal Trainer Tokyo Titan

Updated: Nov 6, 2022

There are many products available for home gyms and garage gyms, so it can be hard to know which ones you should buy. In this tiny room in a small house in the middle of Tokyo, I’ve collected a lot of training equipment and built quite an impressive home gym. In this series, I’m going to review all the home gym products I’ve purchased based on cost, effectiveness, versatility, and practicality, and tell you which products you should buy, which products you should consider, and which products you should avoid.

Cost

Powerblocks are what you would get if you crossed dumbbells with a machine. All the exercises you do are the same as dumbbells, but you can very quickly and easily change weights just by changing the position of the pins. Power blocks are a bit of a steep investment. They're definitely on the pricier side of products you could buy for a home gym. This pair of power blocks with a max weight of 40.5 kilograms cost ¥43,000. For cost, I rate them 3.5 stars.

Effectiveness

You can build an extremely good physique just by using powerblocks. Powerblocks are free weights, and free weights have been proven to be the best and fastest way to build muscle. With power blocks, you can perform compound exercises to train multiple muscles at the same time, and you can also perform isolation exercises to really enhance the development of specific muscles. They can also be used for bilateral exercises to train both sides of the body at the same time, and they can be used for unilateral exercises to fix any muscle imbalances you have between the left and right side of your body. For effectiveness, I rate them five stars.

Versatility

The exercises you can do with powerblocks are almost limitless. You can train every muscle in your body a multitude of different ways, just by changing how you hold the power blocks, how you move your body, and how you resist the weight. For versatility, I rate them five stars.

Practicality

Changing the weight on power blocks is really quick and really easy. They also take up very little space compared to most other gym equipment. In terms of weight selection, with a minimum of 4.5 kilograms and a maximum of 40.5 kilograms, and being able to change the weight in increments of about three or four kilograms, there are almost no compromises you have to make in the exercises you do and the range you perform them in. Almost no compromises. For shoulders and other weaker body parts, you may struggle to get the exact weight and rep range you're aiming for, but for the most part this is no problem. For practicality, I rate them 4.5 stars.

Results

These are the results for powerblocks. But now it's time for the big question: should you buy them, should you consider them, or should you avoid them?

I'm giving this product the green light. Powerblocks are a product you should buy. They are on the pricer side, but just by using powerblocks, you can build an exceptional physique. Plus, changing the weight is very quick and easy and they don't take up much space in your home gym.
